II. PERSONNEL

Management

The station manager, La Salle 56's only full-time employee, oversees the channel's day-to-day operation and reports directly to the Communication Department chair. Responsibilities include:
· producing shows
· programming the channel
· scheduling programs for air and production
· training students in video production
· maintaining studio and portable equipment
· budgeting

Staff

Approximately six work-study students are hired every academic year to staff the La Salle 56 office. Staff members assist the station manager with:
· scheduling and tracking program production
· archiving and logging program footage
· updating the station's on-air message board
· producing programs (either in the studio or in post-production)
· publishing, updating, and distributing the program schedule

Producers

Producers report to the station manager and are responsible for every aspect of their show. Responsibilities include:
· scheduling shoots
· assembling a crew
· arranging for talent & explaining the show format to guests
· completing all graphics, openings, and packages before crew call
· giving the station manager all set and lighting requirements at least 24 hours before a shoot
· giving the station manager either a printout of the teleprompter script with director's marks or a rundown sheet by the morning of show taping
· sending thank-you letters to guests
· shooting promos for the show and station
· notifying the station manager of any problems or concerns

Segment producers report to the show's producer and are responsible for having their segment completed by the producer's deadline and according to his/her specifications.

To become a producer, a person must have worked on a La Salle 56 production for at least one semester in order to understand how a production works and how much effort is required. Applicants must prove that they are responsible and dedicated during this time. By working on other programs, applicants may also meet crewmembers and producers who want to help with other shows.

Talent

Producers choose the program's talent with the help of the station manager. (Generally, producers and segment producers serve as talent since few students want to plan an entire show and then hand the project over to someone else.)

Hosts are responsible for their own wardrobe/makeup and for knowing the show's content prior to crew call. Guests should be provided with the following guidelines:
· Arrive at least 15 minutes before rehearsal/taping so lighting, camera shots, and audio levels can be adjusted.
· Dress appropriately for television.
- Wear more make-up if you have pale skin and use face powder to avoid shine. Studio lights tend to wash out a person's skin tone.
- Do not wear heavy clothing; the lights tend to warm up the studio.
- Try to wear clothing with solid colors instead of small patterns; the cameras can process the information better.
- Avoid wearing pure black or pure white; the camera's iris has difficulty adjusting to the lighting difference.
- Avoid large, shiny jewelry or accessories that may cause strong reflections.
· Know where your microphone is clipped and try not to hit it or cough into it during the taping. Be sure that nothing touches the mic. If an object does touch the mic, the noise distracts the audience from the program's content.
· Understand the show format. Producers should inform guests of the show's length, the number of breaks, and if the guest needs to look into a specific camera at any time.

Participation

La Salle 56 is open to all La Salle University students in good academic and judicial standing. Participants do not need prior experience and will receive training in different areas. Because crewmembers rotate jobs, the amount of training received depends on how long and often a student volunteers.

La Salle 56 is an extra-curricular activity meant to enhance a student's education and experience. Members can be removed from positions or participation for the following reasons:
· Failure to fulfill the position's responsibilities
· Repeated absence or tardiness
· Violation of University and/or La Salle 56 policy
· Unauthorized and/or improper use of University equipment
· Disruptive and/or unbecoming behavior

Recruitment

Three introductory meetings are held at the beginning of the fall semester. Students fill out information forms, which help place the volunteers according to their interests and allow producers to find new crewmembers.

Although encouraged to attend the introductory meetings, students can join at any time by either contacting the station manager or a producer. All show descriptions, shooting schedules, and open positions are posted outside the La Salle 56 office.
