Mission Statement

In keeping with the Lasallian tradition, the Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy strives to prepare professionals with the abilities and competencies requisite for the practice of marriage and family therapy. The curriculum emphasizes a conceptualization of the role of an individual in primary relationships, such as marriage and the family. Students are provided with course work and clinical experiences that encourage them to examine the complex interplay of all forces (scientific, interpersonal, and spiritual) which coexist within and exert influence on an individual and on a family system. The goal is to prepare marriage and family therapists who will competently develop and implement comprehensive interventions; acquire a holistic perspective to health care; understand the complexity of addressing the overall, long-term well-being of individuals and their families; evaluate and treat mental and emotional disorders; and address a wide array of relationship issues that will best meet the needs of clients within the context of a family system.

Educational Outcomes

The Educational Outcomes are based on effective teaching and preparation, conceptualization of clinical skills, diversity, professionalism, ethics, and the principles of the AAMFT Core Competencies, Code of Ethics, AMFTRB Domains, and the Pennsylvania laws for licensing Marriage and Family Therapists.

PROGRAM OUTCOMES

  1. Program will graduate students who will demonstrate an understanding and respect for cultural diversity, and accumulate 60 credit hours of appropriate coursework typically graduating within three to four years, and no more than a ten-year period.
  2. Program will prepare students for employment as MFTs.
  3. Program will meet the educational requirements for licensure as MFTs in PA, NJ, Delaware and most other states.
  4. Program will contract with clinical facilities that are appropriate internship sites offering multicultural populations and diverse therapeutic experiences.
  5. Program will prepare graduate students to pursue doctoral studies in MFT.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

  1. MFT students will demonstrate an ability to utilize an ethical and systemic approach with cultural sensitivity in their work with individuals, couples and families.
  2. Students will demonstrate knowledge of current and traditional MFT approaches, develop effective treatment plans, utilize appropriate interventions, assess and diagnose individuals, couples and families.
  3. Students will demonstrate evidence of a professional understanding of MFT literature, research, and ethical and legal standards of the profession.
  4. Students will demonstrate professional maturity, competence and multicultural sensitivity in all settings with clients, colleagues, faculty supervisors and community populations.
  5. Students will identify as a MFT.

FACULTY OUTCOMES

  1. Faculty will demonstrate sensitivity for diversity within the coursework.
  2. Faculty will incorporate clinical experience, MFT literature and research in their teaching.
  3. Faculty will incorporate AAMFT Core Competencies and Ethical practice in their teaching.
  4. PCMF Faculty will participate in professional development in the MFT field or field related to MFT.
  5. PCMF Faculty will participate in scholarly activities within the MFT program, department, university and community.
