Sandra Camomile’s digital media fine art prints, Too Old Too Long, are on view at the LaSalle University Art Museum, September 15 through December 15, 2006.
As the humorous title suggests, Sandra Camomile’s most recent body of work, created between 2005-2006, addresses the difficult and even controversial issue of women and aging. Her protagonist is the prehistoric sculpture known as the Venus of Willendorf, to whom the artist imaginatively grants a kind of second youth. This Venus is not an artifact in a museum, but a full-blooded woman with a passion for living.
The sixteen digital media fine art prints feature the Venus of Willendorf figurine montaged into various scenarios and contexts from canonical art historical “masterpieces” to slick advertising imagery. Whether driving a red sports car, performing stunts of water ballet or masquerading as Ingres’s well-known painting of the Odalisque, this woman – an emblem of voluptuous maturity – forces the viewer to question common assumptions about youth, beauty and pleasure. Aging, Camomile suggests, may mean losing your looks, but not your zest for life.
Camomile is a mixed-media artist and Assistant Professor in the Mathematics and Computer Science Department, Digital Arts and Multimedia at La Salle University. As an artist, she deconstructs images of women as a way of critiquing traditional female roles and myths. Her last solo exhibition, titled Toilet Brush Tutu, was at Clay College in Milleville, New Jersey in 2004. She has also participated in many group exhibitions, including the Philadelphia Art Alliance and the Corcoran Gallery in Washington to name but a few.
In conjunction with the exhibition, Dede Young, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Neuberger Museum of Art at SUNY Purchase will be talking about Sandra Camomile's work at 12:30 PM on October 5, 2006. The talk is open to the entire La Salle community and the general public.
