La Salle’s Mekongo Named NACDA I-AAA Men's Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year
La Salle graduate Yves Mekongo has been named the NACDA Division I-AAA Men’s Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year, it was announced today. The teams were selected by the Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association (DI-AAA ADA).
Mekongo, a two-time ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-American, including first team honors this season, was also named the Atlantic 10 Men’s Basketball Student-Athlete of the Year. He is one of four from La Salle (Jill Davis, Shannon Duval and Morgan Robertson) to earn the award from the A-10, the second most in the conference.
The Cameroon native was a NACDA I-AAA Scholar-Athlete for the third straight season and joined teammate Steve Weingarten on the men’s team. Robertson was named to the women’s team.
La Salle is the only school in the nation to have three players selected to the Scholar Athlete Teams and the only school to have two men’s basketball players recognized. Additionally, La Salle is one of two schools to have a men’s and women’s student-athlete on the teams.
Mekongo also received Academic All-Atlantic 10 and Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area honors in three straight years. He collected the Big 5 Sportsmanship Award at the Herb Good Banquet in April.
He scored 1,014 points in his career, including a career-best 11.0 ppg. this season.
