Academic Technology Steering Committee
Minutes of the December 12, 2003 Meeting

Members present: John Baky, Sabrina DeTurk, Joan Frizzell, Pingjun Jiang, Steve Longo, Dave Munchak, Ed Nickerson, Jo Anne Snarponis, Jack Sweeder

The committee discussed the recommendations for agenda items which emerged from their November discussions. It was noted that the recommendations fell into four primary categories: policy, support, communication, and technology. Issues of communication and support seemed to dominate the list.

The question of whether to push discussion and action on specific technologies was raised – suggested areas for action included:
WebSurveyor
Electronic portfolios
Online advising
WebCT
Mobile computing
Handheld devices
Use of mylasalle for teaching/learning

After further discussion, it was decided that, while action in these areas would be a good future objective, the immediate goal of the committee should be to assist in providing mechanisms for better communication about currently available academic technologies and better access to support systems for faculty using technology.

The group agreed that a first step in that direction would be to work in the spring semester on the creation Web-based resources for academic technology at La Salle and to make the resources highly visible and publicized to faculty. Support from the Web development team will be sought as the group moves forward on this item.
