Dialogue of Nations

Smuggled by the Tibetan underground out of Tibet in 1995, after spending 33 years in Chinese prisons where he was brutally tortured, the Ven. Palden Gyatso, is the most visible face of Tibetan resistance to Chinese rule and a living example of the Buddhist precepts of compassion and wisdom. An ordained Buddhist monk, he has authored a book, Autobiography of a Tibetan Buddhist Monk (1998), testified before the United Nations, lectures around the world, and is the subject of numerous documentaries, including recently Fire Under the Snow (2008). In Africa, Asia, and South America, thousands of children, boys and girls, are being forced to serve in rebel or government forces. For three years until he was rescued by UNICEF, Ishmael Beah (b. 1980), orphaned by civil war, lived the life of a child soldier in his native Sierra Leone. A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier (2007), tells his story.

A book-signing will follow the lecture.
