In Africa, Asia, and South America, thousands of children, boys and girls, are being forced to serve in rebel or government forces. For three years until he was rescued by UNICEF, Ishmael Beah (b. 1980), orphaned by civil war, lived the life of a child soldier in his native Sierra Leone. A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier (2007), tells his story.
