La Salle University is a mission‐driven university that aims to promote the free search for truth, equip students to serve their communities through informed service and progressive leadership, prepare students to meet their academic and career goals, and inspire students to live more thoughtful and meaningful lives. In support of these goals, La Salle promotes engaged learning practices, which invite students to participate in their education with greater depth, beyond the accumulation of facts and toward a more comprehensive understanding of how these facts are relevant—facilitating an education that is as mindful about the “ends” as it is about the “means.”
One of the ways that La Salle University lives its mission is through its innovative curricular and co‐curricular engaged learning programs. The School of Arts and Sciences has embraced such programs and initiatives as courses with service‐learning components, study abroad opportunities and travel/study courses, undergraduate research, internships, and the Greater Philadelphia Initiative. These programs bring subjects of scholarship to life and engage students with the complex and multi‐layered realities that they will face, while generating new questions and ideas about how they might respond to them. This approach enhances more traditional, classroom‐based academic teaching and learning and can be incorporated into instruction in varying degrees.
