Tired of bumping heads with your SME? This session will give you five strategies you can use to improve your approach to dealing with SMEs. Part of the solution is to look to the future of rapid instructional design and its implications for the designer and SME. Moving toward a future that involves sharing and coaching SMEs rather than correcting them, ultimately makes life easier for everyone. Even if your organization prefers rigid hierarchies rather than collaboration, there is still much you can do to empower others and build a solid working relationship.
Nathan Eckel has worked as an Instructional Designer and eLearning Developer in the defense, healthcare, pharmaceutical, and software industries, and also teaches the Principles of Instructional Design course here at La Salle. His primary interest is communicating the basics of the Instructional Design (ID) process to others, particularly Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), in a process referred to as "Open Source Instructional Design". Nathan is the current President-Elect of the Greater Philadelphia ASTD chapter, and has a book scheduled for release later this year.
