Ph.D., 1985, University of Maryland, College Park
B.A., 1981, The College of Wooster
Areas of Interest
Organic Synthesis: My students and I involved in preparation of compounds that are of interest to the pharmaceutical and medicinal communities. Recent work includes the design and synthesis of radiosensitizers as anti-tumor agents (collaboration with Fox Chase Cancer Center), as well as small molecules that allow for in the study of disease predisposition and prevention (collaboration with Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia).
Bioethics: I am interested in studies involving the interweaving of rapidly advancing science and technology with the profound ethical and religious issues that are associated with these discoveries.
Sustainability and Climate Change: I study the interplay between the population, energy use, fresh water availability and the ever-changing climate (I teach a travel-study course on this topic to Denmark and Sweden).
