On Wednesday, Sept 8th, Dr. Henry Bart's GEO 301 Sedimentology class took a field trip to the New Jersey beaches, in particular Avalon, Stone Harbor, and Cape May, to study dunes, beaches, and sub-water deposits in these locations, and returned to the University with plenty of samples for further study.
This advanced class in geology deals with the origin and transportation of sediments, and of course, sand is an important part of the discipline. These samples obtained will provide the students with opportunities for analysis of the deposits in the lab. The ultimate goal of the studies will be to learn about the transportation and erosion of sand along the South Jersey coast.
In the photographs shown here, students are collecting samples and trenching the beach for study on site.
