New Alum Receives Youth Scholarship to Attend Merton Society Conference

Recent La Salle graduate, Robert Peach ,'05, was awarded a youth scholarship to attend the ninth Conference and General Meeting of the International Thomas Merton Society to be held at the University of San Deigo, June 9-12.

Named after Merton scholar, Robert Daggy, the scholarship affords young adults the oppurtunity to explore the spiritual legacy of the deceased trappist monk, Thomas Merton.

This year's conference--"Revelation of Justice--Revolution of Love"--is centered on Merton's peace teachings, which he wrote during a time of increased international tension at the onset of the Vietnam War and during the Cold War.

The theme of this meeting fits well with an essay Peach wrote as part of his senior-year colloquium as a religion major, "A Mertonian Critique of the Iraq War: A Byproduct of Fear and a Chasm in the Hidden Ground of Love" which is set to be published in the Winter edition of "The Merton Seasonal."
