Dr. Bernhardt Blumenthal, chair, Foreign Languages and Literatures was recently awarded the Robert L. Kahn Prize (2006) for his poem, "Altes Licht."
This prestigious prize, awarded by the Society for Contemporary American Literature in German (SCALAG), was presented for the best lyric poem written in German and that was published in the country this year.
According to Dr. Blumenthal, the poem who's title translated into English means Ancient Light, refers to "light retrieval from a mirror (similar to the photographic process), whereby a lover retrieves the image of his beloved in hologram form as she was when she passed by the mirror, perhaps, 20 years before." |
