Drs. Charles Desnoyers Associate Professor of History, and Luisa Ossa, Associate Professor of Foreign Languages, presented papers at the annual meeting of the Association for Asian Studies in Atlanta on the weekend of April 4-6. Dr. Desnoyers organized and chaired the panel that featured research on Chinese and Japanese accounts of the Americas. In his paper, "In Search of Min Shengin Centennial America," Dr. Desnoyers traced the Confucian ideal of "min sheng"--the people's livelihood--as it was observed by Chinese visitors to Philadelphia at the time of the Centennial in 1876. Dr. Ossa's presentation, "Visions of Cuba in Christina Garcia's Monkey Hunting," examined the literary impact of the character of Chen Pan, a Chinese man tricked into signing a labor contract to work in Cuba in the nineteenth century under conditions scarcely removed from slavery. for medical reasons.
