| < Back to Newsbyte Headlines | | Desnoyers, Ossa, and Biehl Present at Mid-Atlantic Region Association for Asian Studies Conference | On October 31, Dr. Charles Desnoyers, Associate Professor of History, Dr. Luisa Ossa, Associate Professor of Spanish, and Dr. Hsiao-Ping Biehl, Assistant Professor of Spanish, presented at the Annual Conference of the Mid-Atlantic Region Association for Asian Studies (MAR/AAS) as part of a panel entitled “Barbarian Paradise and Buddhist Hell: Chinese Utopian and Dystopian Views of the Americas.” Desnoyers, who also chaired the panel, delivered a paper entitled, “Centennial Philadelphia through Chinese Eyes,” which examined Chinese observer Li Gui’s observations and perceptions of Philadelphia during the Centennial. Ossa’s paper, “Utopias, Dystopias and Perceptions: Cuba and China in Cristina García’s Monkey Hunting,” focused on how Chinese characters in García’s novel view both China and Cuba. Biehl’s paper, entitled “Creating a Utopia: the Chinese Community in Ecuador,” explored some of the reasons Chinese immigrants choose to immigrate to Ecuador, as well as their perceptions of Ecuador after arriving.
