| Columbia University’s academic research journal, Teachers College Record recently published an article entitled “Public Libraries Provide a Safety Net for Our Neediest Children” by Dr. Donna C. Celano, Assistant Professor of Communication. The article, focuses on the availability and importance of Internet -equipped computers in low-income neighborhoods, more specifically in public libraries. Co-authored by Susan B. Neuman, who teaches educational studies at the University of Michigan, the article includes research conducted with a La Salle summer grant. Celano and Neuman’s findings suggest that the lack of access to books and computers in poor socioeconomic communities is increasing the knowledge gap between children from low- and middle- or wealthy income families. The research concludes that in order for the education to bridge this gap, public library systems must make computer resources more accessible.. |
