Without a doubt, it is La Salle’s Faculty that are its backbone. When our graduating seniors are questioned about their best moments here, the answers nearly always revolve around a professor. The student/faculty interaction is deep and constant and forms the basis for the development of the whole person, whether in or out of the classroom. As a member of the Class of 2005 put it, “As LaSallian students, we have benefited in countless ways from the Christian Brothers’ emphasis on excellence in teaching…”

In fact, effective teaching has been the hallmark of the Christian Brothers since their founding in 1689 and has distinguished LaSalle throughout its history. Since 1961, Lindback Awards for Excellence in Teaching have served as living reminders that effective teaching is the top priority of our faculty and our University.

We could go on, but who better to talk about teaching than teachers and their students. This happens regularly here and in particular, it happened recently in Honors 481, a class entitled “How People Learn”, in which students participated in a faculty discussion group based on the book “What the Best College Teachers Do,” by Ken Bain. As a result of these discussions, a pair of current LaSalle students invited all winners of the Lindback Awards to submit their reflections on effective teaching. Their findings are illuminating as are so many of La Salle’s faculty.
