John E. Beatty, Ph.D.

I followed a tortuous and sometimes torturous path to La Salle where I teach courses in Web design, Web development, editing, publishing, visual design, online journalism, composition and sometimes American studies and computer science. The path comprised stints as a writer and educator for parks and museums, an applied ecologist , a features reporters for daily and weekly newspapers, a copy editor and copy chief at a metro daily, and a communications professor in New York, Texas and North Carolina. From all this I can claim to have developed a facility with technology and a good eye for design and content, at both micro and macro levels. I’ll leave the creative writing to others in the department.

Other Professional Activity: I have published reviews and research in Journalism and Mass Communication Quarterly, the Journal of Radio Studies, The Community College Journalist, The Journal of the International Digital Media and Arts Association, Teaching Journalism and Mass Communication, and given research papers at communication conferences (ICA, AEJMC, BEA, PCA) in Germany, Ireland, Mexico, and the United States. Much of that earlier work was on talk radio, and more recently on online journalism. I have been active in the Mass Communication & Society Division of the national Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, for whom I have arranged panels on teaching, and professional responsibility at conferences, and as a paper referee for the Communication Technology Division of the International Communication Association.
