My primary areas of interest are American modernism and post-modernism, both poetry and prose. In the past, I've focused on the poetry of Elizabeth Bishop and her contemporaries and on the prose written about or around the Vietnam War-the novels, short stories, and essays of Tim O'Brien in particular-and both remain focuses of mine. Additionally, I am interested in young adult literature (and the place of young adult literature in the literary canon) and contemporary fiction, and as such I try to include both in my classes whenever possible or appropriate. I find that contemporary and young adult fiction often echo themes from more "classic" works and that approaching more "traditional" works from the perspective of contemporary or young adult fiction often makes those works more accessible to students and provides them with a unique point of comparison and discussion.
