The Western world traces its origins and many of its core ideals to the ancient Greek and Roman cultures.  To understand the Classical languages is to understand the how and why of history and of the present world.  Most aspects of Western culture are shaped by the classical cultures.  These aspects include legal and political systems, science, medicine, philosophy, and art.  A student who chooses a major in the Classics chooses to fully understand the modern world.
