Chair Publishes 'A Journey to the East...' | Charles Desnoyers, History Department Chair and Director of Asian Studies, has just published A Journey to the East: Li Gui's 'A New Account of a Trip Around the Globe', with the University of Michigan Press.
The book is a translation from Chinese of the diary of Li Gui, a Chinese observer at the Centennial in Philadelphia in 1876, who went on to visit and write about several other American cities as well as London, Paris, Aden, Ceylon, Singapore, Saigon, and Hong Kong before returning to Shanghai.
The account, in addition, to being informative and entertaining, proved vital to the emerging nineteenth-century Chinese understanding of the world and was read avidly by reformers such as Kang Youwei and revolutionaries like Mao Zedong.
