| < Back to Newsbyte Headlines | | Shanghai Media Group Interviews Charles Desnoyers | On June 15 a television crew from the Shanghai Media Group interviewed Dr. Charles Desnoyers, Associate Professor of History, as part of a documentary on the history of world's fairs in the United States and Europe. The television crew came to Philadelphia because the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition in 1876 was America's first world's fair and because China was one of its significant exhibitors. Dr. Desnoyers has studied Chinese participation at the Exposition and also the Chinese Education Mission at Hartford, whose students toured the Exposition in July and August of 1876. Desnoyers’ A Journey to the East, published in 2004, examines the diary of Li Gui, a Chinese visitor to the Exposition, whose views of the West were influential for Chinese modernizers. The television documentary is scheduled to air at the end of this year.
