| | Sixteen students along with four faculty and chaperones (Dr. Charles Desnoyers, Associate Professor of History; his wife Jacki; Melinda Ingersoll, Director of Study Abroad Programs; and her husband Travis) travelled to various cities in China from May 4-14 as part of a travel-study course—History 370. On their arrival at a school in Hangu, the Vice-Mayor of the city, faculty, and students carried electronic signs welcoming the "La Salle University Cultural Delegation.” According to Ingersoll, most of the Chinese students and faculty there had never seen foreigners before, and asked about life in America: NBA stars, Madonna and Lady Gaga, study hours, dating practices, and other topics. Before the Lasallians left, the Chinese students had their photos taken and swapped e-mail addresses with them. Ingersoll said, “This cultural exchange succeeded beyond the wildest expectations of all concerned,” and Desnoyers described the experience for his students as “utterly transformative.” | |
