Studying Philosophy
The philosophy major consists of thirteen courses whose backbone is a four-course sequence in the history of philosophy from the ancients to our contemporaries.
And what goals do majors pursue?
- To free themselves of parochial influences, philosophy majors explore the whole history of human thought.
- To sharpen their minds, philosophy majors study logic and the rules of valid reasoning.
- To help them distinguish good science from pseudo-science, majors study rules of evidence and sound principles for grounding claims to knowledge.
- To gain emancipating insights about the social forces that can sustain or erode the quality of life, majors examine the foundations of social, economic and political order.
- To develop their moral sense, majors study the fundamental principles of ethical life and the spiritual aspirations of humanity.
