More recently my interests have focused on constructs related to psychological wellness. Specifically, I am interested in the study of mindfulness, acceptance, defusion/ decentering/ distancing, and self-compassion. My work in this area began with the development of the Philadelphia Mindfulness Scale (PHLMS; Cardaciotto et al., 2008); I would like to explore other ways of measuring mindfulness that go beyond self-report. I am also interested in studying how mindfulness, acceptance, and related constructs might be “active ingredients” in traditional cognitive-behavior therapy and acceptance-based approaches. A separate research interest is the study of active learning and other pedagogical methods. In my clinical work as a psychologist, I utilize empirically-based methods and am interested in understanding how they work. As an instructor, I am interested in applying the same principles in the classroom: identifying pedagogical methods that improve student learning and engagement and understanding their mechanisms of action.
Opportunities for student research involvement:
I welcome both undergraduate and graduate students to share in my research endeavors. There is opportunity to assist with the data collection, data analysis, and presentation/publication of results of current projects. Students may also consider developing a project of their own under my supervision as part of a research course or independent study.
I received a broad-based generalist training during graduate school. I gained experience with clients across the entire developmental spectrum in many levels of care (e.g., inpatient, partial hospital, outpatient, student counseling center). Currently, my main clinical interests are anxiety disorders, depression, and the use of mindfulness- and acceptance-based interventions.

When I’m not at work, I’m usually spending time with family and friends, reading, or at the gym taking part in “Boot Camp” and spinning classes.
