Chair of Finance Department
Associate Professor of Finance and
Risk Management and Insurance Program
Personal Statement:
I love what I teach. Students learn best when they are involved and I hope that my enthusiasm is infectious. I like to keep the classroom informal and relaxed so that we have discussions that bring the theoretical concepts in a course to life through practical examples, personal experience and current events.
Instructional Responsibilities:
- Graduate and undergraduate Corporate Finance
- Graduate Markets and Financial Institutions
- Graduate and undergraduate Employee Benefit Planning
- Undergraduate Fundamentals of Risk and Insurance
- Graduate Enterprise Risk Management
Research Activities:
My research activities allow me to explore topics in which finance, economics, risk and insurance all intersect and bring what I learn back into the classroom. I am particularly fascinated with policy and regulatory issues in the economics of health care, the provision of health insurance, and crises in insurance markets such as medical malpractice. Examples of my recent research include:
- “Medical Malpractice Reform and Insurer Claims Defense: Unintended Effects?” with Anne Carroll, Journal of Health Politics, Policy and Law, vol. 32, no. 5, October 2007.
- “Any-Willing-Provider Laws: Their Financial Effect on HMOs,” with Anne Carroll, Journal of Health Politics, Policy and Law, vol. 27, no. 6, December 2002.
Consultative Activities:
One way that I lend my expertise to others and keep my theory-practice link fresh is by serving on the Board of Directors of The Swarthmore Cooperative Food Market. I serve on the Finance Committee and provide advice on commercial insurance issues. |
