| During the week of September 26, ten La Salle University SLHS graduate students conducted speech and language screenings for the North Philadelphia Head Start Program. The children ranged in age from 3yrs. to 5 yrs. and attend the YMCA/St. Elizabeth Head Start site at 23rd St.and Ridge Ave. This wastheir second semester at the site and we will be conducting the screenings every Fall and Spring semester to meet a federal mandate for all Head Start programs. The screening teams were student led, with University instructor supervision. The students were responsible for testing the children, scoring the tests, completing data sheets for SPSS input, and completing parental notification letters. As part of a service learning experience, the students were required to write a structured reflection, responding to five questions posed by the University instructor. The questions were designed to have the student examine their clinical and personal experiences with this clinical population. It isthe program'sintention to offer this opportunity to ten different students every semester, and select Team Leaders from the students with experience from the preceeding semester. |
