Barbara Hoerst began her nursing career as a staff nurse on a neurosurgical unit. After a few years, however, she moved into the field that was truly her passion – nursing care of women through pregnancy, labor and delivery. For over 30 years, she has worked in this area, primarily in labor and delivery settings. Her dissertation examined factors in labor, delivery, and newborn care in the context of low birthweight infants who were later diagnosed with cerebral palsy.

In 1990, Dr. Hoerst started her formal teaching career at the Episcopal Hospital School of Nursing’s diploma program. She taught first and second year nursing students in theory and clinical medical-surgical and maternal-child courses. She continued teaching until 1997 when she pursued her doctoral degree full-time. Dr. Hoerst has also worked for a medical education company, preparing materials for physicians who were doing presentations on pharmaceutical therapies in the context of obstetrical and vascular conditions. Since 2002, Dr. Hoerst has been a full-time faculty member of the La Salle nursing program. She has taught fundamentals, care of the childbearing family, research in the undergraduate and graduate programs, and statistics. In 2007, Dr. Hoerst became the Director of the Undergraduate Nursing Program.
