Why did you choose La Salle?
I chose La Salle initially because of the everything I had read about it from their website; however, once I got on campus, I realized what a perfect fit La Salle actually was. From my first visit, the one thing that truly stood out about La Salle was how welcoming everyone was. From faculty and staff to the students, I really got the feeling that everyone wanted me to come to La Salle; I wasn't just another face in the crowd, people actually make the effort to get to know you.
When I met with an admissions counselor that day, she recommended that I apply for the Community Service Scholarship. I took her advice and filled out the application and later came for an interview. During my interview, I met with two of the current Scholars who told me a little more about their experiences and what to expect if I did come to La Salle. While I was waiting for the phone call about the scholarship, I realized how much I wanted to come to La Salle. This place just felt like home and I couldn't wait to be a part of this family. Coming to La Salle was the best decision I have ever made.
What can you say about service at La Salle?
One of my favorite things about service at La Salle is that there is something for every single type of person. Whether you like to work one-on-one with people, work with children or adults, or just help out with manual labor, there is a service program for you! I love all of the service activities I am involved with because you are actually able to form relationships with the people that you help. In high school, many of the service activities that you do are not direct service and relationships are not truly formed. With all of the service I do here, I see the same people every week and get to know them on a more personal level.
The absolute best feeling is when you see someone's face light up and you know that it's because you're there to visit them for a little while. Service also helps you make connections with other people on campus. It is probably the best way to meet people because so many students are involved in the FOCUS activities. Some of my closest friends right now I've met through service activities.
What sets a Community Service Scholar apart on campus?
The unique aspect of being a Community Service Scholar is that from your very first day at La Salle, you already have an amazing support group you can always turn to. Living in the same dorm as the other Freshmen Service Scholars is amazing because we are all able to help each other through all the situations that arise. After the retreat in September, I realized even more how much of a family the Community Service Scholars are.
Everyone seriously cares about everyone else and it's awesome to know that there are people you can turn to when you're having a hard time. The older Scholars are really good mentors to have with everything from time management to people skills, but it's also cool to know that they are all there for us no matter what. A Community Service Scholar is different from the rest of the student body because they are not only committed to helping others, they form a genuine community within themselves that serves as an amazing support system you can always turn to.
