While countries declare or are alleged to have nuclear weapons, only five countries are legitimately recognized as Nuclear Weapon States in the historic 1968 Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
Recognized Nuclear Weapon States
United States: 12,070 total warheads, 1,350 awaiting disarmament
United Kingdom: 400 total warheads, 120 awaiting disarmament.
Russia: 28,240 total warheads, 18,000 (approx.) awaiting disarmament.
France: 510 total warheads, 50 warheads awaiting disarmament.
China: 425 operational strategic warheads
Unrecognized Nuclear Weapon States
India: 60 to 80 weapons
Pakistan: 10 to 15 weapons
Israel: 70 to 125 weapons
Alleged Seekers of Nuclear Weapons
North Korea: 7 kilograms of plutonium still unaccounted for
Iran: actively pursuing a deal with Russia for three nuclear reactors with potential fissile yield
Iraq: IAEA has cleared it, but United States questions past concealment of research
Libya: alleged to have contacted former Soviet scientists who are disgruntled in the hope of gaining nuclear secrets
