Philadelphia's Joshua Brinkley Receives
La Salle University's Fraternity Student Award
Philadelphia--- Joshua Brinkley, who recently was graduated
from La Salle University, is the recipient of the Dennis Dougherty
Memorial Scholarship for his service and dedication to the University's
community. The honor is to recognize students who have demonstrated
excellent service while in fraternal organizations.
As a freshman, the Philadelphia native joined the Delta Sigma Phi
fraternity that was started in 1997, a year before he arrived. Two
years later, he became Vice President, and was the fraternity's
President as a senior.
"I've just always been really involved. I think I'm just one
of those take charge kind of people," he says.
As President, Brinkley ran into some challenges. The fraternity
didn't have a charter, and needed to meet certain criteria before
obtaining it. "The fraternity's executive board and myself
had to work closely with our National Fraternity in Indianapolis
in order to get it," he explains. "The work paid-off because
we ended up getting a charter."
Insofar as personal growth, Brinkley said La Salle has helped him
develop both as a leader and a person. "In high school, I was
captain of teams, but in college it is harder because people are
more strong willed," he says. "At La Salle, I learned
important leadership skills that I know will help me later."
In addition to his fraternal activities, Brinkley was an offensive
guard on La Salle's football team, and was a member of the university's
Resident Student Association.
An accounting major, Brinkley plans to pursue a career as a certified
public accountant.
The scholarship is named after Dennis Dougherty, a
La Salle fraternity student who died in a fire.
