Cheverly's Amanda Innes Graduates from La Salle University, Receives the John J. McShain Award

Amanda Innes of Cheverly was recently graduated from La Salle University and was the recipient of the John J. McShain Award, for her service and dedication to the La Salle community. The honor is to recognize students who have demonstrated excellent service in Public Welfare.

A Sociology major and Women Studies minor, Innes focuses her attention on social justice issues she feels are important. Her extra-curricular activities have centered on her belief of bringing awareness to others.

In 2000, Innes began S.A.V.E. (Sexual Assault Violence Ends), which organizes educational events to inform students about sexual violence. "I am really thankful to La Salle for giving me the opportunity to start a program, because I am proud of what S.A.V.E. has done," said Innes. In its first year, S.A.V.E was awarded "The Shield," given by the Dean of Students' Office at La Salle for enhancing awareness within the community.

"S.A.V.E. works to increase awareness of sexual assault and violence issues that could directly affect students or someone they know," says Innes. She felt the intimate nature of the school would be a good opportunity to get SAVE up and running, and was not surprised that she received a positive response from both her classmates and the administration.

She was also a columnist and head copy for The Collegian, La Salle's student newspaper, a foster care tutor, a coordinator and tutor for the university's Academic Enrichment Program, a Writing Fellow for the Communication Department, and a coordinator for La Salle's Committee to End Homelessness, which built relationships with day shelters and the Philadelphia community.

"I am the kind of person who likes keeping very busy, and I work well under pressure," said Innes. "Every activity was worthwhile and had personal investment."

After graduation, Innes wants to work at a local non-profit organization. She plans on attending graduate school to earn a master's degree in public policy.
