Margurete Walsh Named
Director of Human Resources
at La Salle University
Margurete
Walsh is no stranger to the educational system. "I have always
been affiliated with universities, and I wanted to work in academia,
so I was really excited when I saw a position open at La Salle,"
says Walsh, who recently was named the University's Director of
Human Resources in June.
"I
am hoping that my education and diverse business background in service
management, manufacturing, retail and distribution will greatly
benefit the La Salle community," says Walsh, who brings more
than 25 years of experience to the field. "Education and work
experiences are always transferable. It's the dedication, tenacity
and openness to change that move a university forward."
In
her position, Walsh will plan, direct, coordinate, counsel and administer
the university's human resource functions. The Human Resources department
works to maintain human resource services and programs that create
a well-balanced and diverse work staff.
Walsh
began her human resources career as a personnel coordinator with
ARA Services. For the last eight years, she served as the Director
of Human Resources for Bayard Sales Corporation.
While
working at ARA (her first job), Walsh began taking night classes.
"I knew that I had to take it one day and one course at a time.
I never thought I would become a professional student," jokes
Walsh. "However, I was fortunate enough to be surrounded by
great professionals whose expertise provided a solid basis for continued
career development." She earned a Bachelors degree in Industrial
Relations and an M.B.A. in Finance. Currently she is completing
her final phase of doctoral studies in Higher Education Leadership.
"I
think that she will perform superbly," says David C. Fleming,
La Salle University's Vice President for Business Affairs. "She
brings a wealth of knowledge to La Salle, and with the application
of her expertise, she'll bring the Human Resources department to
a higher plateau."
"The
tenure at La Salle speaks for itself," says Walsh. "People
will stay in a work environment where they feel appreciated and
continue to grow professionally. I want to continue, possibly extend
that personal relationship and sense of accomplishment to all departments."
"It
doesn't matter if you work in academia or a corporation; a continuing
process of evaluation is needed. First, I want to understand how La
Salle operates. Once I determine the interrelationship among departments,
I can make any necessary recommendations," she says optimistically.
A resident
of Doylestown, Walsh and her husband, Jim, have a two-year-old daughter
named Michaela. Two of Walsh's nieces are graduates of La Salle.
