The
fate of women and children in post-war Iraq and Afghanistan
will be discussed at La Salle University’s Diplomat-in-Residence
Program on Tuesday, September 30 at 12:30 p.m. The discussion,
being co-sponsored with La Salle’s Women’s Studies
Program, is free and open to the public.
Speaking
will be Carin Schelut-Hillen, MSF, Program Director, Doctors
without Borders, who has recently returned from an assessment
mission in Iraq.
Also
speaking will be LaShawn R. Jefferson, Executive Director
of the Women’s Rights Division of Human Rights Watch.
She is the author/editor of many reports on women's rights,
including “Taking Cover: Women in Post-Conflict Afghanistan”
and "Climate of Fear: Sexual Violence and Abduction of
Women and Girls in Baghdad.”
“With
all of the turmoil occurring in these countries in the wake
of the war on terrorism, we felt compelled to present what
is happening with women and children in Afghanistan and Iraq,”
says Dr. Cornelia Tsakiridou, Director of the Diplomat-in-Residence
Program and a professor of philosophy at La Salle.
The
discussion will be held in the Dunleavy Room, 3rd floor of
