La Salle Students Michael Farrell and Lauren Taylor
Selected as Homecoming King and Queen

Farrell and Taylor PhotoLa Salle University seniors Michael Farrell and Lauren Taylor were crowned Homecoming King and Queen during halftime ceremonies the University’s homecoming football game. The pair won in an election decided by fellow students during Homecoming Weekend.

Taylor, of Fairless Hills, Pa., has led numerous community service initiatives in the region and beyond. One of Taylor’s community projects is AIDS outreach. She organizes student visits with AIDS/HIV patients, in addition to leading student participation in the AIDS Walk Philadelphia.

Earlier this year, Taylor and a group of La Salle students traveled to Boston to participate in Community Servings, a soup kitchen which makes and delivers meals for people with terminal illnesses who are living below the poverty line. While in Boston, Taylor packaged, organized, and delivered meals for the week.

Farrell tutored local children his freshmen year, and since then has traveled to Mexico, El Salvador, and Tanzania for service trips. He was also part of the La Salle Education Association his freshmen year, serving as Vice President his sophomore year, and President his junior year. He was a member of the La Salle Student Funding Board.

A resident of the Philadelphia’s Chestnut Hill section, Farrell oversees 18 service programs at La Salle; he is a coordinator of Neighbor-to-Neighbor (a service group that works with community residents by helping with basic house repairs and block clean ups), and helps at a soup kitchen on Wednesday nights.

“Mike and Lauren have distinguished themselves over the years as student leaders who conduct themselves, in the words of our Affirmation, with honesty, integrity, civility, and citizenship,” said Dr. Joseph Cicala, Dean of Students at La Salle. “Both have been key partners in and initiators of University Ministry and Service community service endeavors, particularly but not exclusively in Neighborhood Tutoring and Neighbor-to-Neighbor.  Mike also served as representative of the Fellowship of Community and University Service to The Point, the umbrella organization of student leaders that advises and collaborates with the Division of Student Affairs to build, sustain, and enhance a community ever more focused on student learning.”
