La Salle’s Gardner Named Editor-in-Chief of the
Journal of Clinical Sport Psychology
Frank Gardner, Ph.D., La Salle professor of psychology and director of the doctoral program in clinical psychology, has been named the founding editor-in-chief of the Journal of Clinical Sport Psychology (JCSP).
Published quarterly, JCSP is a scholarly journal which promotes the advancement of clinical and sport psychology by featuring case studies, theories, and research. “I’m hoping that it will be the leading professional source for both scientific advances and advances in clinical practice,” said Gardner.
Gardner was approached by Human Kinetic Publishing to become the founding JCSP editor-in-chief, after a book he co-authored, Clinical Sport Psychology with La Salle alumna Zella Moore, Psy.D. was published.
He is board certified in clinical psychology by the American Board of Professional Psychology, a distinction fewer than five percent of licensed psychologists attain. Gardner was one of the first psychologists to receive the Certified Consultant status by the Association for Advancement of Applied Sport Psychology. He is also the Director of La Salle’s Center for the Treatment of Anger and Violence.
While completing his master’s and doctoral degrees at Hofstra University, Gardner began his research in sport psychology. His research focuses on using psychological methods to improve an athlete’s performance, and the psychological effects injuries have on an athlete.
Gardner’s role as a sports psychologist began in 1987 when a member of the New York Rangers hockey team asked him to help out his team. “Ever since, I’ve been working for one team or another in hockey, basketball, or baseball” said Gardner. “I’ve enjoyed working in the different leagues; it’s like a fantasy come true.” Currently, Gardner is the team psychologist for the New York Islanders hockey team.
