La Salle University Graduate Michael Nicholas
Awarded Scholarship by Alpha Chi Rho for Law School
La Salle University graduate Michael Nicholas has received a scholarship from the national chapter of his fraternity, Alpha Chi Rho, to attend law school at The College of William and Mary.
"William and Mary is a nationally ranked among law schools, and an education from there presents many more opportunities after graduation. I couldn’t pass that up,” says Nicholas, who majored in History and graduated cum laude, with a gpa of 3.86.
“Since eighth grade I've wanted to be a lawyer because I felt that law touches everything in our daily lives, and I love to argue, so the opportunity to wake up every day and make arguments that materially affect peoples' lives has always been appealing,” says Nicholas. He hopes to practice Criminal law and become a district attorney. His dream is to someday become a judge.
Nicholas visited other colleges, but says, “La Salle was the first campus I visited where I wasn’t treated like a number.” He enjoyed the small town feeling and close knit community of La Salle’s campus.
While at La Salle, Nicholas was a Writing Fellow, helping to tutor other students to improve their writing. He was also a member of Pi Sigma Alpha, the National Political Science Honor Society and was an Resident Assistant in University Housing.
“The education I received at La Salle most assuredly helped me get into law school,” said Nicholas. “It wasn't the substantive courses so much as it was the challenge to think independently and write persuasively, which I attribute more to the History Department. But the best education you get at La Salle, in my opinion, is in growing as a person. You get that from all of the leadership and extra-curricular opportunities available. They helped me to grow as a person.”
"Mike has been a solid citizen of the La Salle community,” said Dr. Joseph Cicala, Dean of Students at the University. “I've known him since his freshman year, and have had many opportunities to observe his work as a Senator for our Student Government Association, a Resident Assistant and Community Assistant for our student residences, and a member and chair of our Judicial Board.”
“[Mike’s] enthusiasm was evident from my first contact with him and stayed at the same high level throughout his enrollment,” Cicala added. “It's been a pleasure to see his skills and abilities grow in proportion over the years, as well. I'm confident Mike will be an alumnus whose Lasallian ‘learning for the greater good’ will benefit the other communities.”
