Abington Resident and La Salle Student Trevor Maki Didn’t Own a Camera But that Didn’t Stop Him From Winning Photo Contest

Even though he didn’t own a camera, Trevor Maki won a photo contest held in the Poconos. The La Salle University junior has just started taking pictures, and when he participated in a photography workshop/contest, he used a camera given to him by the contest’s sponsors, the makers of Red Bull energy drinks. Maki’s winning entry was in the landscape category.

The workshop took place alongside a ski and snowboard competition at Blue Mountain Ski Area in the Poconos; participants used the surrounding areas as the focus for shooting pictures.

“Everyone was taking shots of the skiers, and I turned around and saw a cool shot, so I took it,” says Maki, who bought his own camera after winning the contest. “I’m just getting into photography, and I plan on taking classes.” Now armed with his own equipment, Maki says he takes about 500 shots a week.

La Salle Alum Elected Pennsylvania Speaker of House

For winning the contest, Maki received was a $200 gift card to B&H Photo in New York, one of the largest photography stores in the world.

Maki’s winning photograph was taken in black and white. It shows a ski lift at the end of its run. Below the lift are bushes peeking above snow-covered grounds. Next to the lift is a booth, silhouetted in black. There are no people in the picture

Earlier this year, Maki was one of 11 La Salle University Communication students who were selected by NBC to work as interns at the Winter Olympics held in Torino, Italy. He says he’d like a career in multi-media, where he can use his background in photography and in video production.

A graduate of St. Joseph Prep High School, Maki has been skiing since he was three years old. For the past six years he has worked at Blue Mountain on days when he doesn’t have classes. He teaches skiers how to perform “trick” moves, such as spinning.
