La Salle University Welcomes 1439 New Students
Students Arrive to Big Changes on Campus

La Salle University’s freshmen – who’ll graduate in 2011 – will begin arriving on campus Thursday, August 23 to begin their collegiate careers. In addition to the 780 freshmen, La Salle will welcome 130 new transfer students, 191 new part-time evening students, and 338 new graduate students to campus.

About 88 percent of the 780 freshman students will be living on campus, a record for an incoming class.

The undergraduate class of 2011 is 58 percent female and 42 percent male. They come from 23 states (including Pennsylvania) and four foreign countries.

The fall semester begins with many new developments on La Salle’s campus:

Over the summer, the University implemented a new “emergency text message” system for members of the campus community. Students, faculty and staff can register their cell phone numbers to receive a text message on their cell phone in the case of an emergency occurring on campus.

There is now a “West Campus”—the University’s acquisition of Germantown Hospital property along Wister Street. The School of Nursing and Health Sciences (SNHS) will relocate there for the Spring 2008 semester. (Nursing is one of La Salle’s largest undergraduate majors. The SNHS programs in Nutrition and Speech-Language-Hearing Science will also relocate there.)

Gone is Benilde Hall, a two-story 1948 structure, which was demolished to make room for the expansion of Holroyd Hall, which houses the bulk of the University’s science programs. Holyroyd will be expanded and renovated significantly into a state-of-the art science and technology center which is expected to be completed in August, 2009.

In addition, groundbreaking is set to begin in October on a Fresh Grocer Supermarket and retail shops on Chew Avenue on what is now the Good Shepherd Parking Lot.
