Slatington Resident Sarah Werth
Receives Service Award at La Salle University

Philadelphia -- Last year Sarah Werth was a volunteer and painter; this year she is a leader and builder. This progression of her volunteer activity is one reason the Slatington resident received La Salle University’s Psychology Department Service Award for a junior student in that program.

Werth volunteers for many service activities, but her favorite is Habitat for Humanity, which provides homes for people in need. Werth joined the La Salle Habitat for Humanity group last year, and helped by adding siding and painting houses in Georgia. She knows was that was helpful, but Werth wanted to do more this year. She and fellow coordinators will travel to North Carolina in May where they will build homes for a new neighborhood.

“I wanted to choose a place to do more intense work, and manual labor,” said Werth, who is pursuing a minor in Leadership and Global Understanding (LGU) at La Salle.

A graduate of Allentown Central Catholic High School, she also takes part in the University’s Food Stamp Outreach program, where she works to make area residents aware of the program and also screening potential participants to it.

In addition, Worth is the co-director of campus programming for the Resident Student Association, in which she helps to organize events on campus, such as Spring Fling week, and also works as a writing fellow for the LGU program, tutoring local high school students in composition.

After graduating, Werth is interested in earning a master’s degree in psychology. Currently, she is earning University credit for her volunteer work with Special People in the Northeast, a non-profit organization that provides services and support for families with disabled children.

“I love working with kids,” Werth says.
