Clifton Resident Cara Conocer President of Singers Group
at La Salle University
When Clifton resident and La Salle student Cara Conocer came to the University, her passion for performing was rekindled by her performing with the La Salle Singers. A graduate of Clifton High School, she’s now president of the organization.
Self-described as “not a joiner until college,” she built on her choir experience, which had started in third grade. “I joined the Singers in the spring semester of my freshman year because many of my friends were in it, and said it was fun,” said Conocer. “I love the La Salle Singers because (they offer) a warm environment and feel like a second family. I would do anything for them.”
When asked about the time constraints placed on her by being president, Conocer laughed, “I’m very conscientious about homework and do it a week before it’s due.”
“I came to La Salle because it's small, Catholic, and service oriented,” she said. She also wanted to go away for school and not stay home like most people she knew. “Philadelphia was a good choice since it's two hours away. Far, but not too far,” she said.” She was also attracted to La Salle’s English Department. “The English Department classes and publications looked interesting.”
Depending on the semester, The La Salle Singers have 15 to 20 members, said Conocer. “If we even get half of the people who signed up (at a student activities fair), then we'll have even more,” she said.
The group’s performances often incorporate many different styles and genres, such as show tunes, classical pieces, and even songs sung in Latin, German, and Japanese.
The group performs throughout the semester at pep rallies, assemblies, and sporting events. It also holds an annual Christmas concert (which Cara hopes will be bigger than in previous years) and an annual spring concert at the end of April.
“It's nice to sing for friends, family, classmates, and the community every semester,” added Conocer. |
