La Salle Celebrates 50th Anniversary of Hall of Athletes
Nearly 75 members in attendance
La Salle University celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Hall of Athletes on Sunday during the men's basketball game versus Massachusetts. A reception followed in the Ballroom of the Student Union.
At halftime, members of La Salle's national championship teams were recognized, along with the original class. The national champions are the 1952 NIT Champions in men's basketball, the 1954 NCAA Champions in men's basketball, the 1957 Dad Vail Champions in men's rowing and the 1980 AIAW Champions in field hockey.
The original class comprised of swimming Olympic gold medalist Joe Verdeur '50 (represented by wife Mary Ellen), four-time All-American Tom Gola '55 (represented by wife Caroline), Olympian and former javelin world record holder Al Cantello '55, and three-time Olympian and American world record holder in the triple jump, Ira Davis '58 was also honored at halftime.
All members of the Hall of Athletes had their names read during first half media timeouts and the members of the Coaches Corner were recognized before the game.
