Bryan Marsal, a corporate restructuring expert who was brought on to oversee the bankruptcy of financial giant Lehman Brothers, was the featured speaker at La Salle University’s 10th Annual Economic Outlook Forum. The event, hosted by La Salle’s School of Business and the Business Network at The Union League of Philadelphia, was held Tuesday, January 25, at The Union League.
As co-founder and co-CEO of Alvarez & Marsal, a firm that provides specialized business advisory and management services to troubled and underperforming organizations, Marsal has overseen numerous corporate turnarounds in the healthcare, financial services, manufacturing, retailing, communication, and oil field services industry.
Marsal was named CEO of Lehman Brothers in 2008, overseeing the largest bankruptcy in history. The bankruptcy filing of Lehman, once the fourth largest investment bank in the United States, is widely considered one of the main triggers of the recent global financial crisis.
“Bryan Marsal literally has his finger on the pulse on what is happening with the world’s leading businesses and their impact on the economy,” said Paul Brazina, Dean of La Salle’s School of Business. “He is able to provide insights into the role of regulation in a free-market economy and the role of management to revitalize and build successful companies.”
With more than two decades of hands-on operational and financial experience, Marsal also served as Chief Restructuring Officer of HealthSouth, the largest outpatient surgery, diagnostic testing, and physical rehabilitation services provider in the United States. Previously, he also served as the Chief Restructuring Manager of Arthur Andersen, LLP, and Chairman and CEO of Cluett American Corporation, Republic Health Corporation (renamed OrNdaHealthCorp.), Anthony Manufacturing, and Gitano. He served as Chief Operating Officer for Alexander Department Stores. He serves on the board of the Timex Corporation.
