The cleaning of the guitar is very important. By cleaning your guitar it shows that you have respect for your guitar. The most important thing that my dad told me is to wipe down the strings of the guitar with a cloth after everytime you play. This helps to keep the strings last longer. Healthy strings means better sound. You also want to polish your guitar too. If you dont polish your guitar than it will get stained. It is also important to polish the neck of the guitar and in between the frets because when you play the sweat from your hands dries up on the fret board leaving stains on the neck.
