Please have Journal #1 ready for Wednesday, Sept. 8.

Check this list from about.com — what's on your list?

My "catch": To or too?

This is from Kelly Fincham of Hofstra U. It's been up for one day now. What do you think is the issue here? error in nytimes

More on catches/journals: Here is a site with possibly misspelled signs. including SHCOOL. And here is Regrettheerror, a site of newspaper/web corrections.

Here's a site from CJR to keep in mind for the thornier sort of grammar issues: The Grammar Corner or issues in AP style. The Poynter Institute, among others, wrote about newspaper front pages on 9/11/11. Raises some interesting content and design (editing) issues.

Some historical punctuation errors in movies in 2010 and in 2005 with a bigger film. Here is the corrected title that had to be put on all the DVDs. etc.

Big news! The comma and period inside quotation marks may be dying because of Conan.

One more while we're looking at words. This is a paragraph from the research that shows how we read based on how words look, not by their spelling—by their shape, as your book says. This is the argument against using ALL CAPS as well.

Check back in with Regret The Error (or get his RSS feed)—he posts some corrections from major media that themselves are sometimes error-riddled. What two errors did AP make in this correction? And here's a video from The Washington Post that's pretty funny.

OK—one more also from Regret The Error, run by an obsessive Canadian guy. Stop the FTP, I suppose. See how quickly you figure it out.

We've been discussing ethical issues. What do you think of this cover of The Economist? (What's the issue here? Be precise. What standards are involved? How would it be done online? In a daily paper?).

Should Madonna have been upset by this Glamour cover back in 1990?

A video of last year's AP Stylebook that got nominated for ONA award for their site, Twitter feed, etc.

New—from Nicole: The Oatmeal grammar site.

Good sites for checking who died and current events in 2011.

From Ben, a reminder to check the ad or image against the story.

Look at heds, layout of a major story as we did with 9/11: Bin Laden captured.

Here's an interesting read on the state of journalism from Mashable, a site you should know about for its perspective on online issues. Note their error, how it was corrected and how it spread (and also how he spells "pored"!).

Check your facts before you pay for a billboard (thanks, Bridget). But do you agree with the headline (read the story—how certain are the experts)? Note that Huff Post does use "upstyle" heds.

News flash! Em-dash controversy! (Really—well, sort of.) Also I just found this InDesign Secrets site—looks like an advanced community sort of place, but good to know about.
