Critique and Analysis Assignment |

8/30/11 First assignment: Select a Web site that you think exemplifies good design but that also is very usable and up-to-date. In other words, one for which the Bauhaus School of design motto “form follows function” or "Content dictates design" applies. You should select an up-to-date site that utilizes at least some form of dynamic content (jQuery, other JavaScript, Flash, other animation), and up-to-date CSS, and other technologies (e.g. RSS, AJAX, Lightbox, server-side languages such as PHP, ASP, JSP, CFML). You will need to be able to open and discuss external CSS files, and look for content that is CSS3 or HTML5. Also check to see whether the site is a blog, or powered by blogging software (Blogger, WordPress, TypePad, etc.). Type an analysis of the site that briefly discusses its general usability under
the following categories: Then briefly analyze the site based on the good and bad use of the following
design principles: Finally, describe how CSS, dynamic content (JavaScript, jQuery) and at least one other cool technology that you noticed are used. How are the styles and scripts attached? Are these effective uses of the technologies, or could they have been done another way? Is this a blog or templated site? If so, who is the maker? Finally+, how bloated is the code, how many style sheets are used, etc.? Can you point out any deprecated or hybrid content that seems out of date? Test the site in some version of Firefox and record what works, or doesn't. Try it in Safari or Chrome. What <!DOCTYPE > is being served? (<!DOCTYPE html> = HTML5) E-mail me the site’s URL before next Tuesday’s class, and be prepared to present the report to the class, by navigating throughout the site and illustrating points mentioned above.
