The gender research group’s purpose is to offer opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students to become involved in psychological research. It is a good place to develop skills, get support for your own research, or learn more about gender issues. In addition, students can hear about the next step in the professional development from students who are already there or share their knowledge with others. It meets in the Food Court during the dinner hour, so students can get something to eat while we discuss the projects. Research ideas can come from your real life questions and experiences. Questions asked by students in the group have included:
  • Do men and women enjoy different aspects of holidays?
  • Do attractive models in advertisements lower the self-esteem of men and/or women readers?
  • Can you predict the future of a relationship from what the woman/man says about her/his feelings?
  • Is assertiveness really a social skill?
  • Are the behaviors of characters in "slasher" films related to their fates in the movies? Is the relationship between specific behaviors and fates different for male and female characters?
  • Are women who follow "The Rules" really more successful in relationships

Research completed by group members may even be presented at university local, regional, or even national conferences! Such activities are valuable additions to your resume or graduate school applications! Please feel free to drop by the table. I hope to see you there!
