The Wired Classroom: An Introduction to
Teaching with Technology
Second Session:
July 13-16, 1998La Salle University
Welcome to "The Wired Classroom"! This four-day workshop is designed to introduce you to Lotus Notes and Internet technologies for use in your courses. The workshop is run by Sabrina DeTurk, of the Fine Arts Department, assisted by Bernetta Robinson Doane, Martha Lyle and Arleen Zimmerle, of the Library, Joe Simon and Ed Malinowski of Information Technology. Special thanks to the Teaching and Learning with Technology Roundtable and to Bell Atlantic for their logistical and financial assistance in making this workshop possible.
Workshop Schedule
A schedule of workshop sessions, including links to related materials, is available on a day-by-day basis:
All sessions will take place in the Olney 200 computer lab and will run from 9-3, with additional lab time between 8:30 and 9am and 3 and 4pm (on Days 1 and 2). It is recommended that participants bring one or two floppy disks to the workshop sessions, as it is likely that you will create materials which you'll wish to transfer to your home or office computer.
Related Materials
While no advance reading or surfing is required before the start of the workshop, the following links may be of interest to those of you who'd like a little more idea of the varied ways in which educators are using technology in the classroom:
Matt Brown, "The Current State of Technology and Education" (1997) - article by a student at Brown University regarding the use of technology in K-12 classrooms and also in some courses at Brown
Math 35 - a course web page from Brown (one referred to in the above article); ignore the log-in prompt, it seems to accept guests from the web
Vicky Phillips, "Education in the Ether" - article on distance learning pros and cons
Judith Levine, "I Surf, Therefore I Am" - a teacher argues that her (college) students learn nothing from surfing
