Tips for Creating Web Sites Using Microsoft Word

1.  Create your page as you would any Word document (letter, syllabus, exam, etc.). You may want to keep the following hints
in mind as you are creating:

2.  Go to File, choose Save as HTML, and name your file. You can choose any name and use either the .htm or .html extension.  However, your file name can contain NO SPACES, so the one Word creates for you will probably be unacceptable.  BE SURE TO KEEP TRACK OF FILE NAMES AND EXTENSIONS.  As with working on any document, it is a good idea to save your pages early and frequently during their creation. Say Yes/OK to the dialog box warning about losing formatting on conversion to HTML.

3.  You will still need to load your pages onto La Salle's server in order to view them over the web - other TLTR sessions can help you learn to do this, or you can email me and I'll try to help you out.

4.  You may want to add hyperlinks to your web pages - either to sites outside your own, or to other pages in your own site.  To create a link, highlight the text which you want to show as the link (i.e., Paper 1).  Then, click on the icon which shows a globe with a piece of chainlink in front of it (or choose Insert, Hyperlink).  In the dialog box, enter the name of the site or page you are linking to in the top area.  In linking to an outside site you will need the full URL (i.e., http://www.lasalle.edu); for one of your own pages you can simply use the file name (i.e., index.htm).  Click OK, and your link is created.  REMEMBER, you should save your document as an HTML file before creating hyperlinks.

5.  You may also like to change the background color of your page.  Choose Format, Background, and then select from the colors available to you.  If you choose Fill Effects, you can select a background texture from those provided by Word or from an image file you have saved.  REMEMBER:  background textures have to be uploaded as separate image files; solid backgrounds are part of the page.

6.  To change the color of some of your text, highlight it, and choose Format, Font, then scroll through the Font Colors available and select one (or you can click onthe arrow next to the button which shows a capital A with a line under it - this will give you font colors to select from).
