Annual PunkinChunkin Competition

The annual PunkinChunkin Competition in Sussex County, Delaware pits teams of "chunkers" against each other. The competition is organized into specific categories (see Teams & Categories for more information) such as man-powered and catapult.

Though it may seem a bit silly to an outsider, the PunkinChunkin teams take the competition very seriously. A lot of thought goes into the design of these PunkinChunkers. Some teams, like Team Carbo actually have the blueprints of their machine, named the Onager, on their website.

Team Carbo's Onager

There are four main rules in PunkinChunkin.

  1. All pumpkins must weigh 8-10 pounds.
  2. Pumpkins must remain intact during launch.
  3. No part of the machine can cross the designated starting line.
  4. No explosives.

Feeling inspired to hurl a pumpkin or two? The next PunkinChunkin Competition takes place in Sussex County, Delaware on November 2-4, 2007. Details and directions as well as results from the 2006 competiton can be found at World Championship PunkinChunkin.
