La Salle University
Biology 210: Cellular Biology and Genetics
Spring 2012
COURSE DESCRIPTION
OBJECTIVES:
The cellular biology and genetics course is designed to provide an introduction to the molecular, cellular, and genetic basis of life. Students will study basic biochemistry, cellular structure and function, simple metabolism, enzyme function, cellular respiration, photosynthesis, cellular reproduction, and molecular, microbial, and classical genetics. This course is designed to provide science students a foundation upon which to build in higher-level courses.
REQUIRED
MATERIALS:
Campbell Biology, 9th edition (2011) by J.B.
Reece et al. (Benjamin/Cummings
Publishing Co., Inc., San Francisco, CA)
Available at the campus store. The
study guide is NOT required. As an
alternative, you can purchase this text as an e-book from the publisher at http://www.masteringbiology.com/ . Campbell
Biology is also used as the textbook for Bio 220 and Bio 230.
MasteringBiology. A
subscription to MasteringBiology is required for this course. New
textbooks sold in La Salle University’s campus store come with a subscription
to MasteringBiology, an online resource. (See the first few pages of your textbook for
access information. Additional
information about access to MasteringBiology for new textbook purchasers will be
provided in class.) If your textbook
does not have a workable access code to MasteringBiology
(e.g. if you are using a used textbook), you may purchase a subscription to MasteringBiology online for approximately $49 at www.masteringbio.com (Virtual
Lab is not required.)
i>clicker. “Clickers” can be purchased at the campus
textbook store. You will not need
a clicker for the first two weeks of class.
With the purchase of a new
Campbell Biology textbook at La Salle
University’s campus store you will receive a rebate coupon ($10?) applicable
toward the purchase of an i>clicker.

GRADING:
75% from lecture exams (4) (18.75% each)
20% from laboratory
5% from lecture assignments
SCALE: A = 100% - 90%
B = 89% - 80%
C = 79% - 70%
D = 69% - 60%
F = less than 60%
Questions concerning exam or assignment grades should be discussed with the professor within one week of the day the exam/assignment is returned. No adjustments will be considered after that time. The final examination for this course includes only material covered since the third lecture examination. It is NOT comprehensive.
ACADEMIC
HONESTY:
It is expected that, except where group work is specifically directed, all written work submitted will be that of the individual submitting that work. Plagiarism, cheating, or any other lack of honesty are considered very serious offenses. Copying of a single homework exercise or laboratory exercise (or parts thereof) will result in a grade of 0 for that exercise and, at the discretion of the teacher, may result in a letter that notes the incident being placed in the student’s file in the dean’s office. Cheating on an examination will result in a grade of 0 for (both versions of) that exam. Repeated or flagrant dishonesty of any sort will result in a failing grade for the course. Students are responsible for being aware of La Salle University’s Academic Integrity Policy
SUBMISSION OF
ASSIGNMENTS
Assignments are due BEFORE class on the due date. Place them on the teacher's desk in the front of the room. Assignments will not be accepted after that time. Assignments may be submitted to the teacher who assigned them before the due date.
STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES:
You are expected to be present for all lectures and labs. You are to attend the section to which you are assigned. Students are responsible for all assignments and materials presented in their absence. Absence is not an excuse for extension of assignment due dates.
Students will be given two opportunities to take each of the first three lecture exams. For each of the exams one version will be given during scheduled class time and another version will be given during one of the "free periods." Exams will be given only at the times scheduled. Regardless of the reason (sickness, family death, athletic event, school-related activity, etc.), exams will not be offered at any time other than the time (date and hour) published in the course syllabus. (See syllabus for scheduling of these exams.) Both versions will cover the same information and will be approximately equal in difficulty and coverage. Students may take one or both of these versions, however they are STRONGLY URGED TO THOROUGHLY PREPARE FOR AND TAKE THE FIRST VERSION. If a student takes both versions, both will be graded, but only the version with the highest score will count toward the student's course grade. If a student takes only one of the versions, the grade on that exam is the grade that counts toward the course grade. If a student takes neither version of one of the first three exams, the student MUST take a CUMULATIVE make-up examination on Monday, April 30 at 1:00 PM in Holroyd 271. This cumulative make-up examination will cover ALL of the material covered on the first three exams (chemistry and biochemistry, cells, molecular biology). If a student takes neither version of two or three of the first three exams, the student will take the cumulative exam and the score earned will be credited toward only one of the missed exams. Other missed exams will receive a grade of 0. Students who have not missed both versions of one exam are not permitted to take the cumulative examination. Students should take the final exam when scheduled. There will be only ONE version of this exam. If for some extraordinary reason a student is not able to take the final examination when it is scheduled, appropriate arrangements must be made with the teachers of the course. If these arrangements have not been made by the end of the university’s final examination period for the current semester, it will be assumed that the student has earned a 0 for the final exam.
Students will be responsible for reading, knowing, and understanding all of the pages in the text indicated by the instructor. Students are also responsible for all handouts given during the course of the semester and for any additional readings assigned by the teacher.
“Supplemental Instruction” (SI) has been attached to this course to help you get the most out of your efforts. With SI, a trained student, who has already successfully taken this course, attends the class again and conducts regularly scheduled review sessions for the students in the class. The SI Leader knows the course content and can also share with you successful study techniques for this course.
The use of cell phones is not permitted in the classroom. Please turn off your cell phone before entering the classroom. If you are expecting a critical phone call during a class period, please have the caller phone the science department office at 215-951-1245. Someone in the office will get the message to you. During examinations cell phones must be stowed away in your pocket, bag, or equivalent at all times. Failure to do this will result in a grade of 0 for the examination.
Should the campus be closed for an extended period of time before this course is completed, attempts will be made to continue this course via the Internet. In this case students are responsible for checking their email, “Blackboard” and the course web page (http://www.lasalle.edu/~mcphilli/210main.htm) for updates and assignments.
